Folklore aside, the Dragon’s Egg is a nickname for the mineral we call Septarian. Septarian was formed during the Cretaceous period, 50 to 70 million years ago when the Gulf of Mexico reached as far north as Utah. As the water receded, decomposing sea life congregated under the remnants of volcanic eruptions and the mud hardened then cracked. It’s possible there are fossils within Septarian shapes that were left in the wake of all that chaos. Septarian is often found in ball or egg shapes hence the nick name, Dragon’s Egg.
They often contain yellow calcite, quartz, aragonite, and bentonite clay.
